After Selena Gomez’s turn in Emilia Pérez, it now seems like it’s time to head back to her more-acclaimed project, Only Murders in the Building, for which she received a recent Emmy nomination. Hulu seems content to have the show run indefinitely, and it’s one of the rare streaming services that has new seasons come out exactly a year apart for some series.
Will that happen this time? Well, there’s some news on that front. It’s just been announced that Only Murders in the Building season 5 has begun production, giving us a significant clue about its release date.
Basing this off season 4, that started filming in March of 2024, filming wrapped in June 2024 and the show was out at the end of October in 2024. The release dates of the last four seasons are:
- Season 1 – October 19, 2021
- Season 2 – August 23, 2022
- Season 3 – October 3, 2023
- Season 4, – October 29, 2024
So, now that we know filming is also beginning in March 2025, if those gaps hold, at best, this should be an early October 2025 release like season 3 or late October 2025 like season 4. Again, around a year between seasons. Between season 1 and 2 it was even less, somehow. Great news!
How is this possible? Hulu does this with The Bear as well, and I think it has a lot to do with filming locations, as so much of both of those shows reuse many of the same locations year after year. And also cast availability, where this is the main project for all three of those actors, even if ones like Gomez dip out for a movie ever so often. (I think The Bear may have more problems with this in the future with actors like Ebon Moss-Bachrach now a member of the Fantastic Four for Marvel).
As for Only Murders in the Building, we have no real idea how long it will run, but it’s still well-watched, it’s still getting nominated for Emmys every year, so unless the cast and creators get bored, there is probably no reason to stop. And I’m sure Hulu itself loves it because of all the acclaim and that it’s a series with a tight timetable, unlike 90% of the rest of the streaming industry these days. So yes, see you in October, most likely.
