Remnant 2 just hit over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, more than double the peak of the first game. While it had good reviews, the word-of-mouth has been off the charts, and turned it into a massive hit for Gearbox and Gunfire Games.
Why is it so good? Many reasons, but one is that the game kind of goes wild with fun secrets. A number of classes in the game have been hidden, but one, the Archon, goes above and beyond.
Understanding that datamining is a part of every game like this, Gunfire actually made it part of the discovery of the class. Here’s Remnant 2 Principal Designer Ben Cureton of Gunfire:
The class was only “revealed” through datamining, and unlocking it is a pretty wild process.
You have to unlock two other classes first, but the key is to equip 12 specific items and skills. These were the datamined steps that no one would have found on their own randomly, from the looks of it.
You must have the following:
- The Invader archetype at level 5 with the Worm Hole skill activated
- The Explorer archetype at level 10 with Fortune Hunter skill activated
- Amulet: Leto’s Amulet
- Amber Moonstone
- Ring: Anastasija’s Inspiration
- Ring: Zania’s Malice
- Ring: Black Cat Band
- Armor: Realmwalker Armor
- Long Gun: Ford’s Scattergun
- Handgun: Cube Gun
- Melee Weapon: Labyrinth Staff
- Relic: Void Heart
Most of this is cosplaying Ford, a character from near the beginning of the game. After doing the above and equipping all that stuff, you can open the corrupted door in the Labyrinth. You go to the Backrooms and find the Strange Box Engram item. And there you go.
It’s an extremely meta way to unlock a character, and I’ve rarely seen anything like this in a game. I’ve heard of secret messages buried in the code for dataminers, or even false information to throw people off the set, but an entire class unlock hidden away for dataminers to find? A round of applause for that one, Gunfire, just when I thought I’d seen everything.
I will be starting my Remnant 2 playthrough this Monday since it has been recommended to me by roughly 10,000 people, but I had some other things to finish first. Really looking forward to it, and I guess I know how to get the Archon class now.
