Five new maps are headed to Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II in Season 5, which feels like an appropriate number. Three of these are core 6v6 maps and two are smaller Gunfight/Faceoff maps. Four of the five will go live this week when Season 5 launches, with the fifth and final map launching at the mid-season Reloaded update.
Here are all five maps and what to expect from each of them.
Strike (6v6 — Launch)
Strike is a larger 6v6 map that’s actually a remake of the classic Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. A re-released version of the map also made it into 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, and now here it is again, brought into modern gaming as a Middle Eastern urban area with lots and lots of streets and interiors to battle your way through. This should be a good map to get longshots on, and a sniper’s paradise.
Punta Mar (6v6 — Launch)
Punta Mar—which basically means ‘Sea Point’ in English—is a seaside tourist town that’s a brand new map created for Modern Warfare II. It’s also a much smaller map than Strike, which should please those of us who prefer small-to-midsize maps. Like Srike, this also takes place in (an admittedly less-sprawling) urban environment. Some of the rooftops will be accessible, adding some verticality to this smaller map.
DRC – Zone 1 (6v6 — Mid-Season)
The only new map not releasing at the launch of Season 5, DRC – Zone 1 is set in the Building 21 DMZ zone. It’s basically the smaller Visitor Center that stands next to the larger Building 21, and is a more interior-focused small-sized map.
Lounge (Gunfight — Launch)
Set in a fancy nightclub, replete with grand piano and upscale bar, Lounge is a more compact Gunfight map that looks like a lot of good, straightforward fun. I do appreciate how varied the Gunfight maps have been so far in Modern Warfare II.
Canal (Gunfight — Launch)
If that windmill looks familiar, it’s because Canal is yet another map set in Vondel. The map is set in a canal next to a brewery. As you can see, bridges and a moored boat all add to the traversal options in this unique Gunfight map, which is a bit on the larger side. Gunfights can take place in the water, on the walkways or even in the brewery and restaurant.
All told, a good chunk of maps to sink our teeth into in Season 5. New Gunfight modes—Armored Gunfight, Gunfight Snipers, and 4v4 Faceoff—are launching in Season 5 as well. The new multiplayer 6v6 mode Havoc brings chaotic arena-shooter-style gameplay to the game as well, with random powerups adding a bunch of gameplay changes like low gravity (Boots Off The Ground) and fire-tipped crossbows and Molotovs only (Flameshot).
Season 5 of Modern Warfare II and Warzone kicks off this Wednesday.
