Hearstopper has returned for season 2, the unlikely hit that did not have a ton of viewership in season 1, but sky-high reviews had Netflix renew it for not just one, but two more seasons.
Heartstopper season 1 was one of Netflix’s best reviewed ever, but if we dig into the numbers now that season 2 is here, things just got even more impressive. There’s no other way to describe it other than to say lightning has struck twice. Season 2 has a 97% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a stunning 99% from audiences.
I thought I would go through and combine every audience and critic score across Netflix, grabbing all of the 100% one I could find, and adding their audience totals for the entire series, along with a few of the highest high-90s ones.
Here are the results:
- Heartstopper – 98/98 = 196
- Arcane – 100/96 = 196
- Cyberpunk Edgerunners – 100/96 = 196
- Derry Girls – 99/94 = 193
- Maya and the Three – 100/90 = 190
- Mo – 100/89 = 189
- Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts – 100/89 = 189
- The Dragon Prince – 100/85 = 185
- Beef – 98/86 = 184
- Blood of Zeus – 100/84 = 184
- The Babysitter’s Club – 100/80 = 180
- Katla – 100/79 = 179
- Big Mouth – 99/74 = 173
- The Order – 100/71 = 171
- I Think You Should Leave with Time Robinson – 97/73 = 170
- Red Rose – 100/56 = 156
As you can see, Heartstopper is tied with just two other shows to be Netflix’s best-reviewed ever, the hugely beloved pair of video game animated adaptations, Arcane and Cyberpunk Edgerunners. However, I’d say what Heartstopper has done is even more impressive, given that it now has two seasons, while those two shows only have one. It is much harder to make the math hold up with two entirely different seasons to average.
The same goes for Derry Girls, as almost all the other shows in the lower 190s/180s usually have one season as well Derry Girls. Derry Girls has three seasons. Though if we’re doing seasonal totals, Big Mouth has the utterly insane total of six seasons so far, longer than almost all other Netflix shows last, and it still makes the list here.
But the main story this week is Heartstopper, still putting up those incredible numbers for its second season. Is it actually the best show on Netflix? That’s a subjective take (my favorite probably The Haunting of Hill House, nowhere close to being on this list), but yes, I think it’s very good and worth watching. Give it a shot.
