Updated 10/22/23. See update below.
The worst show on TV returns for its final six episodes, the first of which debuts on AMC this Sunday.
I’m speaking, of course, about Fear The Walking Dead, which somehow manages to keep getting worse every season. You think it’s reached an all-time low and then they surprise you once again.
Season 7 with its nuclear wasteland Texas and Strand as a tinpot dictator over a single office building that everyone wanted was pretty gosh darn awful, and yet somehow Season 8’s first half managed to top it.
The only silver lining—and the only reason that 8b might be better—is that Morgan finally left the show at the end of the first six episodes. The back half of Season 8 will be mostly original cast members. Kim Dickens has returned and she, along with Colman Domingo and Ruben Blades, are the remaining OGs from Season 1.
We also, sadly, have Dwight and Sherry, who tragically lost their child in one of Season 8’s most ridiculous subplots, and then split up. They were always a terrible couple. I just wish they’d exited alongside Morgan so we could really focus on Strand, Madison and Daniel.
Oh, and Troy Otto is back. Troy was a terrific character in Season 3, when this show had decent writing and people in charge who could tell an actual story. I’m waiting in dread to see what they do with his character. Who, I guess, was only mostly dead. We shall see. Brace yourselves!
Update: 10/22/23
Well I’m working on my review of the midseason premiere but just had to share this little update ahead of time. In the opening moments of the episode, the show’s creators have lifted and recycled footage frame-for-frame from Season 6, Episode 11 of the show.
Both scenes show food being prepared—one at Teddy’s community and one at Strand’s new community. The only problem is that the footage is identical, which is not only bizarre but quite possibly a new low for Fear The Walking Dead. Hilariously, after the food is prepared in the new episode, Strand delivers it to an older gentleman and instead of being the omelet that was being cooked, it’s a couple pieces of fried chicken and some mashed potatoes.
I made a side-by-side comparison video so you can see what I’m talking about:
Too. Damn. Hilarious.
