It’s Sunday, and it’s gorgeous out, and I thought today would be a good day to look back on all the big historical events that transpired on this day throughout history. Get a little history lesson before we embark on today’s Wordle. If nothing else, we can learn why we celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

On May 5th, these notable historical events have transpired:

1. 1862: The Mexican army achieved victory over the French forces in the Battle of Puebla, celebrated annually as Cinco de Mayo.
2. 1891: Carnegie Hall, one of the most prestigious concert venues in the world, opened in New York City.
3. 1925: John T. Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution in Tennessee, leading to the famous Scopes Monkey Trial.
4. 1945: The Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp in Austria was liberated by the Allied forces during World War II.
5. 1961: Astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American to travel into space aboard the Freedom 7 spacecraft, launched by a Mercury-Redstone rocket.
6. 1980: Operation Nimrod, a successful raid by the British Special Air Service (SAS), ended a six-day siege at the Iranian Embassy in London.
7. 2005: The United Kingdom held a general election, resulting in a third consecutive victory for the Labour Party led by Tony Blair.

In retrospect, I really should have guessed something to do with today’s holiday like tacos, but crate worked pretty well for me. I was left with just 12 words, though I didn’t know it at the time. Still, I had three yellow boxes, and I figured I might as well just juggle them around.

I thought decay would do a good job eliminating letters, but it did much better than I expected, with four green boxes turning over before a disappointing grey. All I could think of at this point was decal, and I was lucky—it just as easily could have been decaf. But who wants decaf?

Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.

If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “decal” comes from the French word “décalque,” which is derived from the verb “décalquer,” meaning “to copy by tracing.” “Décalque” itself is a borrowing from the German word “Abklatsch,” which has a similar meaning of copying or tracing. In English, “decal” refers to a design or image that is printed on special paper or material and then transferred to another surface, often used for decorative purposes on items like vehicles, windows, or ceramics.
