Have you ever thought to yourself, “What I’d really like is a Nintendo alarm clock to wake up to in the morning?”
No? Well neither have I, but that’s exactly what we’re about to get in the form of the Alarmo, a Nintendo-branded alarm clock in an age where I suspect most people just use their phones. Of course, Nintendo has never been about chasing trends. The Japanese game-maker forges their own path, one quirky gizmo at a time.
The Alarmo let’s Nintendo fans set the time, pick a scene from various video games, and then in the morning “you’ll experience immersive sounds and music from the scene you picked, followed by a game element arriving to help wake you up!”
The alarm works differently than the ones you’re used to. It happens in phases. First, a gentle sound begins to play unique to the scene you picked. After a few seconds, a character or some other thing will arrive on the scene, along with new sound effects. At this point you can wave your hand or move to make the alarm quieter (which sounds like a design flaw when it comes to actually waking up is the goal). After this, the alarm snoozes for a bit before repeating the scene. But if you stay in bed too long, the alarm gets more intense and a new visitor—like Bowser—will arrive with a more convincing wake-up pitch. Once you get out of bed, you get a little “victory fanfare” for your achievement and the alarm stops.
Admittedly, I can think of few things that would make me feel more ill-will toward a video game more than being woken up by it in the morning, but it is a charming idea. The new gadget is available at select retailers this March while supplies last. If previous Nintendo limited-offerings are anything to go by, this will sell quickly and might even become a hot-ticket item on eBay.
The $99.99 Alarmo is a pretty great gift idea for the gamers in your life. There are 42 different scenes to choose from, with options from games like The Legend Of Zelda and Super Mario Odyssey. You can login to your Nintendo Account and download other scenes via WiFi from titles like Super Mario Kart 8 and Animal Crossing. No Nintendo Switch Online account is needed.
