In a blog post that has also been updated to slightly clarify the controversial pricing structure for Overwatch 2’s Story Missions, Blizzard has revealed that the Hero Mastery mode will be arriving later than expected. Rather than debuting when Overwatch 2’s next season starts in August, Hero Mastery will become available the following month.
“In order to deliver the best possible experience for the new Hero Mastery mode, we are postponing the launch of the mode to our Overwatch 2: Invasion mid-season update in September,” the update reads. “Thank you for understanding.”
This is perfectly fine! I don’t mind waiting an extra month so Team 4 can polish up this new mode and make it as good as it can be. As a reminder, it’s a single-player mode that will test your skills with individual heroes. There’ll be global leaderboards so you can see how well you’re doing compared with other players.
I’d say there’s going to be plenty new stuff that arrives in August to keep players occupied in the meantime — especially for those willing to fork over $15 for access to the Story Missions.
The new core PvP game mode, Flashpoint, looks interesting from what I’ve seen of it. There’s a fresh co-op event set on areas of King’s Row we haven’t seen before that sounds intriguing. I’m curious about the updated player progression system too.
We’ll learn more about all of that next week when the Overwatch 2: Invasion livestream takes place. You’ll be able to watch it on the Overwatch Twitch channel at 2PM ET on June 21.
